Fair College Admissions Act would stop the prioritization of wealthy alum offspring admittance.
Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York introduced legislation that would end legacy admissions into high-profile colleges. Some of those institutions, such as M.I.T., have already banned the practice of prioritizing the admissions of children of wealthy alumni, but other universities, such as Harvard and Yale, continue the practice.
“Children of donors and alumni may be excellent students and well-qualified, but they are the last people who should get an additional leg up in the complicated and competitive college admissions process,” Senator Merkley said, pointing to the Supreme Court’s decision to end race-conscious college admissions this past June.
“All students deserve an equitable chance to be admitted to institutions of higher education,” Congressman Bowman added.
